J. K. Rowling's Beedle the Bard
The seventh and final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, made references to a book called The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Following the last Potter book, author J. K. Rowling created six handwritten copies of the tales, illustrated by herself. These six copies were created as a way to thank six people who had been very influential in the Harry Potter series. A seventh copy was done to be auctioned off to raise funds for The Children's Voice, a part of the Children's High Level Group charity.'The idea came really because I wanted to thank six key people who have been very closely connected to the 'Harry Potter' series, and these were people for whom, you know, a piece of jewelry wasn't going to cut it. So I had the idea of writing them a book, a handwritten and illustrated book, just for these six people. And well, if I'm doing six I really have to do seven, and the seventh book will be for this cause, which is so close to my heart.' - J. K. RowlingThe seventh book's successful bidder was Amazon. Originally, the book was expected to be auctioned for 50,000 pounds, but the bidding exceeded all expectations. The final bid was 1.5 million pounds, or $3.98 million. On July 31, 2008, it was announced that standard and collectors editions would be released for sale to the general public on December 4, 2008.
